Goal Setting for Personal Growth
reaching and achieving goalsSetting and achieving goals for personal growth can be very satisfying. But setting and failing can be quite frustrating and discouraging, causing us to turn away from setting any future goals. Before committing to your goals, you’ll want to know a few important considerations about your goals that you want to achieve. So ask yourself the following questions and then get quiet and reflect on the answers that come up for you. If you can get connected to your true spirit in this process, you can set the stage for reaching ultimate success!

Is it really your goal?
Are you pursing this goal for some personal reason, and not because it’s what someone else wants you to do? A major cause of goal failure is that we take on the wishes of what other people think we should have, be or do. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with getting input f rom valued family and friends, but it’s important to make sure that when you decide on a goal, it is a goal that you want for yourself.
What are your reasons for wanting to achieve this goal?
Is there clarity for you around why this goal is so important? Do you really know what it is that you hope to gain from achieving this goal? Consider the benefits of your goal in terms of how you’ll feel when you achieve it. Lock that feeling in your mind so you can call it up when you have a s etback or feel discouraged.

To what extent does this goal get you energized?
Goals that are too easy or too hard really don’t work to motivate us. Yes, it’s important that we stretch ourselves with what we think we are capable of achievi ng; challenging is still doable. You will know if a goal is doable because when you imagine the goal and visualize yourself there. If not, the goal may be too difficult or too easy. If it’s too difficult you’ll get easily discouraged by lack of progress and probably give up. If it’s too easy, you may be likely to put it off thinking you can start working on it l ater.

To what extent can you imagine yourself reaching this goal?
A goal that is challenging but achievable, has clear and attractive benefits and is truly your heart felt goal, will be easy to visualize. You should be able to see yourself achieving the goal and enjoying the benefits. If not, change the goal, set an interm goal or go back to step one, reflecting on whether it is really your goal.

Create your life….

When your life comes to an end, what will you have accomplished? What will be the results of all your daily, weekly, and yearly efforts? And what about today? Do you see the remainder of your life as limitless in its potential? Do you feel you have great, untapped promise? Sadly, most people feel they are capable of a life far more enriching than the one they are currently living. So what’s missing? And what steers us away from what we want and makes us accomplish far less than we had hoped? What we all must understand is that our level of success is in direct proportion to what we actually get ourselves to do – what we actually act upon, believe in, are passionate about, and willing to follow through on.

Extensive research conducted at several prestigious universities points to the same conclusion: every person who accomplishes a great deal, and performs at optimum levels, does so by having a clear vision and goal of what they want. Having a clear vision and goal is the hallmark of every form of high achievement.

Dreams, goals, and your own innate potential are useless without having the ability to follow through on them. So, what clear vision do you have for your future, or are your hopes merely a dream?

“The most pathetic person in the world is someone who has sight, but has no vision” – Helen Keller

To achieve anything, you first have to see what you want. To do so you must create your own personal vision. Visioning and goal setting is a combination of using the mind and body, mental and physical, thoughts and actions.

It is essential that you have a clear vision of the situation that you look forward to attaining. It also helps to know why you desire it. Sometimes getting to the “true” answers takes some work, so be prepared. To assist you on your quest, it can be helpful to enlist in a co-creative partnership. Finding a trained and qualified coach to work with can make a big difference and save you a lot of time. If you do decide to go down that road, do your homework. Interview the coach like you would any other professional. Make sure they have been trained by a school that has been accredited by the International Coaching Federation and ask for a complimentary session to see if you are compatible.

Athletes, Fortune 500 executives, actors & actresses and even Presidents have all enlisted the assistance of a coach to improve their performance level and move them to a greater level of success. Today, you too can achieve that legendary life, and you don’t have to do it alone!
